"Living high - training low": Effect of moderate altitude acclimatization with low-altitude training on performance

Levine BD & J Stray-Gundersen

J Appl Physiol 83(1):102-112, 1997

Following a 2-week lead in phase, and 4 weeks of supervised training at sea level, three randomized groups participated in 4 weeks of training while living at moderate altitude and training at sea level (high-low), living and training at moderate altitude (high-high), or living and training at sea level (low-low). Aerobic performance measurements were only improved in the high-low groups, with significant improvements (5%) in maximal oxygen uptake (V02max), endurance, velocity at V02max, and maximum steady state oxygen threshold.
