Acute altitude exposure (3800m) and metabolic capacity in the middle gluteal muscles of equids

Nine days of sub-maximal exercise in a group of horses trained at 3800m had no effect on the skeletal muscle’s capacity for oxidative phosphorylation or lipid metabolism. The anaerobic capacity of the skeletal muscle was significantly reduced however. These results suggest that training horses at high altitude to improve the aerobic capacity of skeletal muscle at lower elevations may not be beneficial.
